hey Simon
there's no scaffolding, as you say, but i did do a quick thumbnail before hand (on a different piece of paper) so i had an idea of what i'd be drawing - i don't usually do this, i just wanted the video to be fluid. so i only half cheated. i also tend to move my sketchpad around alot more, but for the video i had to keep it quite still, so that was a challenge.
I find with charcoal, you have to make each stroke count, cos once it's there it's there. With pencil i'm lazier i think as i can rub it out (only so often of course). I always found life drawing with charcoal was easier and more fluid than with pencil, though you don't get the same detail. i sketch imaginatively in pencil. i may do more charcoal-pencil though (like the video) now you come to mention it, as for long shots and impressions of things, for a first concept this may prove useful. hmm
i don't sketch on pc as i have no tablet and my mouse control only goes so far. i do a hardcopy, as you say, then scan it for colourwork
thanks for taking an interest.

i'm perfectly happy to answer any questions, but i can only tell you what i personally do, not what anyone should do (being self taught and all that) in terms of process
