Description

Qai reach their coming of age at thirteen years and their average height is a little over five and a half feet. They have soft, fine fur that covers their entire body with a variance of colour in the reds and browns. They have long head hair ranging in colour from white to black to brown and to blonde.

A feature that is common to all Qai of any colour is that there is a darkening of the fur around the hands and feet. This fur is a characteristic black and turns grey with old age.

There are actually two sub-species of Qai although they are impossible to distinguish apart. The single difference between them is that one is amphibious and the other is not, although they are able to hold their breath underwater for at least ten minutes. All Qai have acute hearing comparable to many animals and have excellent night vision like that of an owl.

Creation Myth

Qai commonly hold that there was once a dichotomy of beings - two factions who traversed the universe together. From their two opposite perspectives - those of the spiritual and the other of matter and physical energy - they created many things of form and no-form. In time some of these beings desired closer contact with the other side of the dichotomy, wishing to bring the sides closer together in equilibrium and harmony in the universe of Edadh. So it was that they conceived a union and thus were created the mortal race of Qai - spirits cloaked in physical form.

Cultures

cerchae symbol Cerchae

The Qai created two cultures on Edadh: Cerchae (pronounced ker-kay) and Saha. When the Dzaa invaded, members of the Cerchae fled into the wilds and continue to fight a guerilla war against the invaders to this day. These rebels are known as the Ang. Qai can also be found within the ranks of the Dzaa (pronounced zar).
